a crisis can be averted. if democrats and republicans can come to an agreement on the big fight that has been frankly smothering american politics for weeks now. president obama announced earlier today that he wants to see a deal done by tomorrow on the big debt ceiling fight that has consumed every bit of oxygen in d.c. for the last few months. the president saying tonight that congressional leaders are on the clock. they have 24 to 36 hours to get a deal done. as planning a vote that the u.s. government should not default on our debt and shut down comes down to the wire, we are inching close enough to the edge here that two of the world's major credit rating agencies have warned that our national credit rating may be downgraded as a result of this standoff. the day that the u.s. would actually hit the debt ceiling and start going into default and shutting down is august 2. but this does not mean that we have until august 2 before we lose our national credit rating. that could just happen right now. because of the uncertainty and because of how long it is taking to get this don

said he wants this big deal but this thing broke up today, the meeting ended with the president telling these leader toss go back to their members and ask them what do they think can pass and then report back to the president with something that they believe can pass by this saturday morning. they're not even having a meeting tomorrow. now, despite all that i am told by my sources that there's not a lot of optimism that this particular negotiating process here at the white house is going to actually end up leading to the real deal, and a lot of effort and attention is now turning to a different process that's happening in the u.s. senate and another alternate deal that's being worked out between the two senate leaders that could instead end up raising the debt ceiling. a lot of hope is centered there, anderson. >> basically what is that deal? what is that negotiation based on? that's harry reid and mitch mcconnell. >> it's a little complicated but it would effectively raise the debt ceiling which would allow for spending cuts that can be spelled out by the president but don't ne

sides defense spending is a big bargaining chip. looks like defense will take a bigger cut because of that. >> every single one of the panels has recommended bigger cut spending. secretary gates has even said he was expecting a bigger number than 400 billion or that some of the estimates out there were bigger than 400 billion. marcus, what are some of the things the pentagon doing to prepare for a leaner future. gates was the one out there arguing to keep spending levels high. >> well up to now, the pentagon mainly way of saving money is through efficiencies. last budget go around for over five year period they said we will save $178 billion. however they reinvested 100 billion. now they believe more work can be done in terms of efficiencies, however more has to be done in terms of whether it's weapons, whether it's instrain. >> kate let me end with you, do we know, now that we have some of the these proposals on the floor, do we know where the 2012 defense bill is going to ultimately end up? >> i think all of the bills that have been passed so far, i think you will see defense get cu

have big problems developing now in sunnyvale. we're talking about a jackknifed big rig right there approaching the lawrence expressway exit in the southbound lanes of 101. now, three lanes are blocked in the southbound direction. no reports of any injuries with this jackknifed rig or what exactly the truck was carrying but we know that traffic is just squeezing by right now partially in that left lane and the center divide. also the on-ramp, the lawrence expressway on-ramp to southbound 101 is completely blocked. 280 is the best alternate in the area. not big backups now but if this continues to be out there for a while which it sounds like it could, chp just issued a traffic alert for that stretch, they will just said that they are hoping to get lanes 30 to 40 minutes after the tow crew arrives arrives son scene. we are waiting for word for when the crew arrives and then it could be 40 minutes from then so this is going to be an issue for the start of the morning commute for sure. so 280 a good alternate in the meantime. elsewhere bay bridge not too bad. it's friday light here. no

small budget deal, one to $2 trillion over the next ten years or a big budget deal, $4 trillion with tax increases also over the next ten years. do these scenarios fill out a possibility or are they off the table. >> i think it's still going to ultimately be one of those three buckets. there's the first model which is basically politicians come together, can't hash out a deal and put in budget profits reform with targets where they'll come up with savings later or some kind of spending tax, promising to cut spending but they don't still in the policy. that's probably too close to what we've seen in the past or politicians say they'll do something but they'll get specific about how. the other two deals are more specific policy changes that will be included with the debt ceiling increase, either a smaller deal in the neighborhood how far 1 to $2 trillion dollars and stays away from the hard issues, no taxes, no social security or healthcare or the big deal we've been calling it to fix the deficit in this situation. that's what president obama and leader boehner have talked about. that'

the negotiations that we've been engaged in here at the white house for a big deficit reduction and debt reduction package. we were offering a deal that caused for as much discretionary savings as the gang of six. we were calling for taxes that were less than what the gang of six had proposed. and we had -- we were calling for modifications to entitlement programs. this was an extraordinarily fair deal. if it was unbalanced, it was unbalanced in the direction of not enough revenue. nancy pelosi, harry reid, the democratic leadership, they sure did not like the plan that we were proposing to boehnor, but they were at least willing to engage in a conversation because they understood how important it is for us to actually solve this problem. and so far, i have not seen the capacity of the house republicans in particular to make those tough decisions. what a lot of the american people are so disappointed by is this sense that all the talk about responsibility, all the talk about the next generation, all the talk about making sacrifices, that when it comes to actually doing something dif

leaders, what i've tried to emphasize is we have a unique opportunity to do something big. we have a chance to stabilize america's finances for a decade. for 15 years, or 20 years, if we're willing to seize the moment. now, what that would require would be some shared sacrifice, and a balanced approach that says we're going to make significant cuts in domestic spending, and i have already said i am willing to take down domestic spending to the lowest percentage of our overall economy since dwight eisenhower. it also requires cuts in defense spending. and i've said that in addition to the $400 billion that we've already cut from the defense spending we're willing to look for hundreds of billions more. it would require us taking on health care spending. and that includes looking at medicare and finding ways that we can stabilize the system so that it is available, not just for this generation, but for future generations. and it would require revenues. it would require, even as we're asking the person who needs a student loan or the senior citizen or, you know, people -- veterans who ar

to do something big. we have a chance to stabilize america's finances for a decade, for 15 years or 20 years. if we're willing to seize the moment. what that would require would be some shared sacrifice and a balanced approach that says we're going to make significant cuts in domestic spending. and i have already said i'm willing to take down domestic spending to the lowest percentage of our overall economy since dwight eisenhower. it also requires cuts in defense spending. and i've said that in addition to the $400 billion that we've already cut from defense spending we're willing to look for hundreds of billions more. it would require us taking on health care spending. and that includes looking at medicare and finding ways that we can stabilize the system so that it is available not just for this generation but for future generations. and it would require revenues. it would require, even as we're asking the person who needs a student loan or the senior citizen or, you know, people -- veterans who are trying to get by on a disability check, even as we're trying to make sure that al
